This piece is an antique Art Nouveau card tray (also called a visiting card or calling card dish) produced by the renowned German manufacturer WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) around 1900–1906. Commonly referred to as a "maiden" tray, it is a classic example of the Jugendstil style, characterized by its organic, flowy form and the relief of a woman with long, sinuous hair. These were typically made of silvered pewter or silver-plated Britannia metal. The dark patina is common as the original silver plating wears away over time. Would benefit from a professional restoration, but I think it would come up lovely From a smoke free home
