This mechanical register indicates the distance crossed by the ship through the water by registering the number of times in which the five -wing section of the mechanism turns. The indicator shows the nautical miles traveled, in hundreds, dozens and one. The register was towed to the stern of the ship and pulled inside for the readings. Although it was not perfect, the archer strain was significantly more accurate than the traditional stone strain and hourglass strain. This tool was patented on September 18, 1866. Thomas Walker & Son was a British company that patented its first register in 1861. Dimensions: 41x13 cm.
