This antique Austrian cast iron plaque is modelled on theseal of majesty ofEmpress Maria Theresa (1717–1780), created for the Dutch Court Chancery in the early years of her reign. This design also inspired the famousMaria Theresa Thaler, first struck in 1741 and later frozen with the date 1780 after her death, one of the world’s most enduring silver trade coins.
