Two rare officer's gorgets (collars) of the French National Guard and Gendarmerie from the Second Empire period. The kidney-shaped breastplates are made of solid brass with silver applications and have a beautiful, age-appropriate patina. The first example shows an elaborate, silver-colored application in the center with the Gallic rooster on a globe, flanked by crossed flags with the Napoleonic motto “Liberté / Ordre Public”. The second example shows a variant in which the Gallic rooster is magnificently framed by a sculptural laurel and oak wreath. Both pieces have the original rear fastening pins and wire hangers for attachment to the uniform. A fascinating set of decorative, military-historical collectibles from the 19th century. Century in good original condition (see photos). Di.
