Makenge Winnowing Basket - Zambia Mid 20th C.

Originally used to winnow grains, but now used as decorative pieces. The baskets are made from the Makenge tree, which sends out very long, shallow roots. Only the small roots are gathered, so the bush remains alive to produce more for the future.
