They operated an iron foundry in nearby Syston and were early manufacturers of ovens, kitchen ranges, and ironwork for the building trade and early railways. This is not a spirit kettle. the kettle would have been filled with boiling water which would have been kept hot by placing the steel insert into a hot oven or fire and then placed in the internal tube which would then radiate heat.
