Giambologna's Head of Zephyr, now a paperweight.

£260.70

A fascinating Grand Tour fragment, now a paperweight. The character of the head harks back to Giambologna's Flemish childhood with shades of cartoonist Herge's Tintin features. This once held his Flying Mercury aloft on a column of air. Probably an ardent Fleming he had the chance to spread those distinctive looks and charming golden locks around the globe on different bronze pieces and marble statues in and around Florence. Apart from the young Tempest there is an adult version of Tempest blowing a horn, a marble Putto in Il Duomo and an abundance of putti on fountains and plinths. This child Zephyr face bears a striking resemblance to his older face self statue portrait in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
