These fractional weights were the "counter-weights" on an Analytical Balance (a highly sensitive scale kept inside a glass case to prevent air currents from moving the needle). The folded corner design allows a scientist to use ivory-tipped or non-magnetic tweezers to hook under the edge and lift the weight without sliding it.
