The Asama Maru was built for NYK’s premier high-speed trans-Pacific Orient-California fortnightly service, coming into operation from autumn of 1929. By 1941 it was being used for military purposes and eventually in 1944 it was torpedoed and sunk by USS Atule in the South China Sea.
