Dating back to the era of Napoleon III in the middle of the 19th century, this is an antique French papier-mâché box in black lacquer with a floral decoupage and the Paris' Coat of Arms in the lower left corner including its moto in latin: Fluctuat Nec Mergitur (e.g. rocked by waves but unsinkable) as added by Georges-Eugène Haussmann in the early 1850s. A truly delightful item. Originally used as a stamp or trinket box Marks, scratches & wear commensurate to age. But overall very good.
