Recently found in an old ‘domed’ trunk. My online research suggests the following: A beautiful African art sculpture - Senufo Bird also known as the Guardian Bird is from Southern Mali. Specialized artisans hand carved it - probably 1870-1890 or possibly earlier. Please see descriptive photographs. This is not one piece of solid wood, the legs look to be made from a lighter coloured wood. Stands approximately 26.5cm tall. Senufo people believed the Hornbill bird (Kalao) was one of the first living creatures symbolizing intellectual power and significant knowledge. The importance of the beak touching its swollen belly proposes pregnancy.
