After obtaining his MD from Edinburgh University, Lizars served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy off the coasts of Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular War. In 1831 Lizars was elected Chair of Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
