Alvar Aalto, born in 1898 in Finland, was a Finnish architect and designer whose work shifted from the functionalism of early modernism to a more organic, human-centered approach. Aalto studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology, graduating in 1921, and began practicing during a period of industrialization in Finland.
