The portrait depicts the holy madonna breast feeding the baby jesus, this form of iconography is known as the nursing madonna, or in Italy - madonna del latte ( Madonna of milk). These form of paintings were known to exhist from as early as the 12th century, and were popular through the 13th and 14th centuries in Tuscany and Iberia.
